Subplane is a design-focused IDE for building and managing design systems optimised for LLMs, and capable of outputting complex, production-ready designs.
It's a passion project, and a bet on where product design is heading. Right now, AI is mostly being used to prop up ways of working we've already outgrown. I think that's backwards. The real work, the part nobody's doing yet, is building the tools of tomorrow and teaching LLMs to think and behave like real designers. That's the frontier.

The starting point. I tested an AI agent's ability to use a well-known, coded design system. The conclusion: design systems are built for humans, and are nowhere near optimised for an LLM to be their primary consumer. It gave me real insight into what would need to change for that to be possible.
